Introduction

Introductory Post: The meaning behind " An Imperial Affliction"

The name of my blog demonstrates life's meaning and how you should live every moment to your fullest. I chose the title " An Imperial Affliction." My poem is based on the novel " The Fault In Our Stars". An Imperial Affliction is a novel that the characters read in The Fault In Our Stars and the book ends half way through a sentence. This is because our lives end at unexpected times, and we always wonder " If they lived for another two minutes how would they have finished their sentence?"  You have to take every moment into consideration and live life to the fullest because you never know how our lives can stop just like that. This novel is a heart breaking but heart touching piece, and the poem sums " An Imperial Affliction" up. This reflects a part of my personality by the way I act. I try to live every day to the best of my capabilities because there are always road blocks in life and they come out of no where. The line "Shadows hold their breath" reminds me of the end of someones life because they are disappearing into the light, causing a shadow to form. Even though it is just a saying it still has the same meaning. To me this is one of the most powerful lines in the poem. It causes us to think of what really happens when we end our lives.

There’s a certain Slant of light,
Winter Afternoons –
That oppresses, like the Heft
Of Cathedral Tunes –

Heavenly Hurt, it gives us –
We can find no scar,
But internal difference,
Where the Meanings, are –

None may teach it – Any –
'Tis the Seal Despair –
An imperial affliction
Sent us of the Air –

When it comes, the Landscape listens –
Shadows – hold their breath –
When it goes, ‘tis like the Distance –
On the look of Death –
